new Jamuel Saxon video

+ Jamuel Saxon - 1000 Centipedes

Directed By: Darren Pearson

Another band vaguely affiliated with my college, and adding to the ever-expanding list of

-people
-i know
-that do
-rad shit

is Jamuel Saxon. It's times like this that I wonder if my old Zombies & Pirates-released Abbreviated Daylight album will be worth a small fortune in the near future.

iamamiwhoami

Seems about time to post the mysterious iamamiwhoami videos that have been floating around:

+ 9.1.13.669321018

Thought this was Goldfrapp initially (mostly due to the owl imagery). Taking a letter for each number of the heading, such as A=1, B=2, the beginning of the title decodes to "I AM". Still working on the rest of it...

+ 9.20.19.13.5.723378

This one decodes as "ITS ME". But I now get the feeling this is less of a Golden Filter/Goldfrapp project. A few folks on GvsB have postulated Christina Aguilera, and I'm inclined to agree...More on this when more surfaces...

the P3 Guld awards, or why i want to visit Sweden

P3 Guld (or P3 Gold) is a Swedish radio station that caters to the young. Being young, and finding it fascinating that a country would be wise enough to cater to an age demographic, rather than the myopic standard of catering to groups who want to identify with a genre bracket, I looked into the station, and the recent results of their award show, which aired on January 19th.

The award categories themselves mirror the Grammys or AMAs, with the exception of the "Golden Mic" award, which, as the P3 Guild site explains, is "given to the best live performance of the year". Refreshing. I'd always assumed that as far as the radio is concerned, "live" is dead. Unless you're a late night NPR host playing cuts from The Grateful Dead's stint in Winterland.

The awards themselves also seem to resemble an American award show, except the Swedes appear not to be afraid of spectacle or sex. Here's an example from Staygold, who premiered their song "Backseat", in a clip which Pitchfork summarizes as follows...

A man with a twirly mustache in a drum major uniform, singing in falsetto, coos lyrics about listening to Afrika Bambaataa in his convertible, which of course leads to you having sex with him. Spank Rock raps while wearing a priest's collar. Two remarkably thick backup dancers do the sort of moves that American TV standards departments would frown upon. When Robyn appears, the crowd goes crazy. Then Robyn and Spank Rock slow-dance with each other.

+ Staygold - Backseat (feat. Spank Rock, Damien Adore & Robyn)

+Jay Reatard dead at 29

Jay Reatard, garage-rocker responsible for the albums Blood Visions and Watch Me Fall was found dead in his sleep the morning of the 13th. He was 29. Statements have been made by Goner Records and Matador, to which he was signed.

+New Album From Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom is set to release a new album, Have One On Me, between the 19th and 23rd of February. Legends say that the freak-folk-renaissance-themed harpist was blessed with musical talent at birth, the offspring of Kate Bush circa The Kick Inside and Gabriel, noted angel of Biblical lore.

For those of you who are confused by sarcasm, Newsom is trained in classical, modern and folk harp styles and has the voice of an overexcited five-year old who has consumed too much candy for their tiny body. And that's just the kind of artist I craaaave.

Inevitably, the release of a new album means a 5-venue tour that will be sold out in minutes on Ticketmaster. Personally, I hope for another guest contributor who can work the same magic that Van Dyke Parks did on Ys, providing orchestration and additional crazy. For now though, we will have to wait and see.

Remember Sade? (Psst, it's "sha-DAY")

+ Sade - Soldier of Love

"I'm in the hinterland of my devotion..." Damn girl!

Lose those background dancers. Keep the disco suit though.

+ Shlohmo - Ghosts pt. 2

Shlohmo is Henry Lauffer, an L.A.-based, 19-year-old producer with real chops. "Ghosts pt. 2" has a little bit of dub-step flavor, but not enough to tweak me out (of all genres, I've found dub-step to be the most disconcerting, and I can't exactly pin-point why). There's a good deal of hip-hop here too. I think we'll be seeing some important work from this kid in the next few years.

new Crazy P / Still Going track | 1.09.10

Today my primary laptop had a meltdown and I was a victim of credit card fraud (that's right, add salt is people too), which means only one thing for you guys...you're getting DANCE MUSIC.

Oh, to dance! Nothing lifts the spirit more.

Found this nifty tidbit on Slutty Fringe:

MP3: Crazy P - Caught up (Still Going Dub)

Have to admit, I know nothing about Crazy P. Just seems like they chose a terrible name. Then I started doing research and found out that Crazy P is short for Crazy Penis, which, I suppose, is better?

I guess they've been around for a good fifteen years, but their success was never reflected stateside. This new track will probably win them some recognition with Still Going (of the NYC club scene) on remix duties. The album is presented by 2020Vision and can be found around here somewhere.

The cut makes me happy because Still Going are teh shite. (P.S., it's never "still going?" These guys always deliver just the right amount.)

You know what, I'm gonna recommend this:

because all the mp3s I found were the radio edit. And we can't have that. Have some good headphones or baller speakers on hand, it's worth it.

Enjoy! (And don't trust Worldwide Software Services when they ask for your credit card number!)

+ Came across some sweet tunes earlier today from Quebec's Brusque Twins, who make intelligently drowsy minimalist/bedroom disco. After sending an inquiry they were kind enough to get back to me quick-smart, and the result is that you fine people have the pleasure of this track. Don't thank me. Thank them.
